DSLR survival

When I went to Burning Man my digital camera was a point and shoot. My current rig is a DSLR, which gets much better shots, but is more expensive (especially with the lenses) and has a lot more opportunities to get wrecked.

I found that I spent an awful lot of my time taking pictures of the artwork, and that for me that artistic expression was a lot of the fun I had on the playa.

How bad is the environment for DSLRs. I saw quite a few out there, but don't know how many died in the process.
